RSL Australia marks passing of Senator Jim Molan AO DSC

The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSLA) is mourning the passing of distinguished service veteran and Australian Senator Jim Molan AO DSC.

The Liberal Party Senator (72) died yesterday following a two-year battle with cancer.

A former major-general in the Australian Army, Jim Molan represented New South Wales in the Senate since 2019 and bravely battled cancer after being diagnosed in 2021.

RSL Australia President Greg Melick said Senator Molan’s long military career saw him serve in East Timor and Iraq, where he was deployed in 2004 in one of the most senior operational postings held by an Australian in recent years. He was made an Officer in the Military Division of the Order of Australia, awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the US Legion of Merit.

“Jim Molan had an enormous sense of duty and was a great servant of his country, going on to serve in the Australian Parliament following his distinguished military career,” Greg Melick said.

“He displayed all the best traits of duty, leadership and courage in both his military, public and personal life.

“He was a great friend to the veteran community and was much admired by those who knew him and those whom he had assisted.

“Jim Molan will be sadly missed and on behalf of the veteran community, the RSL extends its sincere sympathies to his family and friends.

“Jim’s final battle is now over, but his courage, service and commitment to Australia will be long remembered,” Greg Melick said.

“Lest we forget.”
