RSL Day Clubs aim to improve the quality of life for veterans, their spouses, war widows/widowers, as well as other interested members of the community.

It is not required that you be a member of an ex-service organisation or that you are a veteran or an ex-service member to belong to a Day Club.

Day Clubs offer a setting in which to develop friendships and social support networks by providing the opportunity for members to be involved in a varied program of stimulating activities that enhance health and wellbeing.

A Brief History of RSL Day Clubs

Day Clubs were established in NSW in 1977 as a joint venture between the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), NSW Office and RSL NSW.

Sponsored by RSL sub-Branches, each Day Club is open to any interested member of the community, not just ex-service people.

What is a Day Club?

  • Each Club provides social and activity opportunities for older people, mostly still living at home, but who are unable to attend more active programs offered in their local community. (Membership criteria apply.)
  • The Clubs meet in local community halls one day a week between 10am and 2pm.
  • Clubs may provide transport for members getting to and from the Club.
  • All who attend pay a contribution for the day.

What Happens at a Day Club?

Transport may be provided to and from the Club. Typically there is an arrival and welcome following by gentle exercise and morning tea. Various activities happen throughout the day providing opportunities for mental stimulation, community involvement, and leisure and social time.

Volunteering at a Day Club

Day Clubs are run entirely by volunteers.

Volunteer positions include: coordinating the Day Club, managing the finances, assisting with the day-to-day operations such as preparing morning tea and lunch, or organising fun program segments.

Like the general membership, volunteers are drawn from both the ex-service and wider community.

Ongoing support

Each Day Club is sponsored by a local RSL sub-Branch.

Volunteer support and training is provided by Day Club Advisors.

The Day Club Advisors and the State Coordinator of RSL Day Clubs visit each Club regularly and are available to advise the volunteers on any aspect of operating a Club.
