RSL Welcomes Veteran Housing Program

The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) has welcomed yesterday’s launch of the Australian Government’s Veterans’ Acute Housing Program.

RSL National President Greg Melick said addressing homelessness in the veteran community was a priority issue for the League and it was pleasing that the Government was honouring its election commitment with the introduction of this program.

This Veterans’ Acute Housing Program is funded by the Housing Australia Future Fund, and forms part of the Government’s $32 billion Homes for Australia plan.

“We understand that $30 million will be allocated to support veterans and their families experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. This is a much-needed initiative,” Greg Melick said.

“Each year, some 6000 veterans are at risk of homelessness and on census night in 2021, approximately 1500 Australian veterans were listed as being homeless.

“These men and women have served Australia with dedication and sacrifice and deserve to be comfortably housed.

“Often, circumstances dictate veterans are at greater risk of homelessness than the general population and the Government’s specific allocation of funding for the sector is greatly appreciated.

“The RSL commends the Government on its initiative and looks forward to the program working to reduce the risk and incidence of homelessness in the veteran community,” Greg Melick said.
