2025 events calendar for veterans and families

Don’t miss these key anniversaries, commemorations and other events relevant to veterans and their family members in 2025.

By Lachlan Haycock

Start the new year by familiarising yourself with a selection of notable military anniversaries, commemoration events and other activities veterans and families may wish to take part in throughout 2025.

From Veterans’ Health Week to the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, these events are opportunities to meet new people, reconnect with mates and colleagues, spread word in the community about the support and services that are available via RSL sub-Branches, and much more.

Below, we’ve outlined a range of such occasions, and ways you can get involved no matter what time of the year.

Keep an eye on the RSL NSW website, newsletter and social media for updates throughout the year for more information about the schedule and location of events.

How can you spread the word?

Here are some suggestions for ways to foster interest in and support for the causes of veterans and families throughout, not only on widely known dates such as ANZAC Day:

  1. Set reminders on your phone or computer for dates such as City2Surf, and sign up once registrations open in April.
  2. Attend an ANZAC Day march, a Remembrance Day vigil or a commemoration marking Korean Veterans’ Day.
  3. Ask your veteran friends, family members and work colleagues what their plans are for events such as the Mardi Gras parade, and encourage them to take part. It could be a chance to swap stories, check in with one another, and reflect on the experiences of fellow veterans. You can also learn more about the activities organised by DEFGLIS, an inclusive community for LGBTIQA+ people in Defence, and their family members.
  4. Share posts made by RSL NSW on social media in the lead-up to and following occasions such as the MEAO Commemoration and Vietnam Veterans’ Day. This could encourage those in your network to take notice and join in paying their respects by attending a service.
  5. If you’re a member of an RSL sub-Branch, volunteer to help organise a community activity as part of the RSL NSW Sport & Recreation Program. If you’re not yet a member, sign up for free.

Fostering the bond between veterans and members of the community is at the core of the work done by RSL sub-Branches – and the above calendar is a great place to start.
