Listen to State President Rod White chat with Stuart Bocking on 2UE
Ben Collison, 28, lied about serving in Afghanistan and East Timor to win favour with genuine veterans who participated in a veteran support group on the Central Coast.
In addition to lying about his service record, Collison had worn military medals which he did not earn. In fact, one of the medals was the Australian Active Service Medal of 1975, a conflict which took place 13 years before he was even born.
The magistrate slapped him with a $550 fine and a 2 year good behaviour bond but no conviction was recorded.
RSL NSW President Rod White says people who fake their service records cause great distress to the veteran community.
